Easy DIY Art Project You Can Make Today!

Tired of blank walls? I feel your pain! I had been looking for the perfect large scale art for my dining room wall to no avail until I decided to make this easy -and affordable- DIY art.

The best part is that you can personalize it to your preferred color palette an desired size! Painting it was also the perfect mindless activity to unwind after a long day.

I started by making the frame. I though about buying one like this but ended up opting for making my own because I wanted a specific size that I couldn't find in stores for my budget.

I used these 1x2 boards and my pocket hole maker (plus some scrap wood) to make the inner frame.

For the front, I got this board that I cut to size and glued and nailed to the frame.

I primed the surface with this primer and used this foam roller for a smooth application. I had the cutest helper!

I knew I wanted oak for the outer frame, so I got 1x2 boards of oak. I used two 6ft ones and two 4ft ones. I used my miter saw to make miter cuts for a more professional look. These corner clamps were so helpful to keep the joints in place!

I really like the natural look of oak so I used this top coat that preserves the color to perfection.

Now for the fun part!!! The watercolors!

I used my kid's watercolors, and a random brush I had around. Nothing fancy, but it didn't matter because the pattern will be very forgiving.

I did make sure I used this high quality watercolor paper so that I could hold up to the moisture of the paint/water.

I chose my color palette and started making strokes all over the paper. I did that over, and over, and over. And then some more. The quantity of papers you'll need will vary depending on the size of your art.

To put it all together, I cut the watercolor paper into strips using my paper cutter, marked the area where they would go, and started gluing. I ripped the edge the strips that went on the edges for added texture, then I used a hot glue gun and started weaving the strips of paper. This took me a handful of hours, but it was one of those mindless activities that actually relaxed me.
